A history of musical roots before DJ Boomtown
Once upon a time, before Laughlin Meagher became a professional DJ and electronic artist, he embarked on a musical endeavor called Drop Radio. Picture this: It's 2002, and Laughlin finds himself on the vibrant shores of Salt Spring Island, BC, itching to infuse the local music scene with a fresh dose of creativity. Enter his best bud and bass player, Dave Campbell, who also decided to make the island his creative sanctuary, craving the country life and a musical reinvention.
But what's a band without a drummer? Enter Fidel Vargaz, a Peruvian percussionist whose rhythmic prowess and Latin flare were legendary in the scene. The trio united at the Anise Cafe, Salt Spring Inn's former incarnation, where Friday night Jams set the stage for something extraordinary. The musical chemistry was palpable, and Drop Radio was conceived in the depths of Fidel's basement on Walker Hook. From that moment on, Drop Radio became a sonic force to be reckoned with, gracing every stage and event Saltspring had to offer. They ignited the Anise, set the Vesuvius Pub ablaze, owned Fulford days, mesmerized the crowd at Moby's pub, rocked the Fall fair, energized the Lions club, and left their mark at Beaverpoint, Mahon Hall, Fulford Hall, house parties, and even rallies in Centennial Square. Their reach extended to the enchanting shores of Lasqueti Island, where their melodies resonated with the islanders. For 3 to 5 glorious years, Drop Radio ruled as Saltspring's favorite act, captivating audiences with their unique blend of reggae, ska, Latin vibes, and the old-school funk and rock influences that defined the island's musical zeitgeist. Their sound was the embodiment of Saltspring's soul at that time, pushing boundaries and defying genres. Amidst the journey, Drop Radio experienced the ebb and flow of band dynamics. They embraced new members, including horn players and a keyboardist, and welcomed various drummers and guest appearances along the way. After three years of relentless dedication, Drop Radio ventured into the recording realm, crafting a full-length album at the legendary Old Growth Records in Burgoyne Bay. With the guidance of the esteemed engineer Daryl Chonka, who became an unofficial fourth member of the band, Drop Radio poured their hearts and souls into the recording process. It was a labor of love, marked by toiling and triumphs. You can now experience the magic for yourself by listening and downloading their album on a "pay what you want" or free basis at: https://desunos.bandcamp.com/. As with many artistic journeys, the path of Drop Radio eventually encountered obstacles. Differences among band members and Fidel's return to Peru took their toll, leaving the band's sails windless. Yet, their impact on Saltspring's music scene remained indelible, forever etched in the memories of those fortunate enough to witness their sonic revolution. Drop Radio, a testament to Saltspring's creative spirit, is an essential chapter in the island's musical heritage. Though they may be gone, their melodies continue to reverberate through the veins of Saltspring's vibrant artistic community. Let their legacy live on, and may their music forever ignite the flame of creativity in our hearts.
