A history of musical roots before DJ Boomtown
Drop Radio was Laughlin's last live music project before he became a dj/electronic artist. In 2002 Laughlin moved to Saltspring Island, BC and was itching to contribute something fresh to the unique music and creative scene on SSI. The Anise Cafe, current location of the Saltspring Inn, hosted a weekly Friday night Jam. Laughlin's friend and old Bandmate/bass player Dave Campbell decided to move to SSI. Dave wanted to see what the country life was like and also wanted to also pursue a more creative approach to music on the island. The final piece to this puzzle was finding a Drummer. Fidel Vargaz was a Peruvian percussionist who was a staple rhythm player in the scene who brought his Latin flare and intensity to the Anise cafe Jams. After a few Fridays, the musical spark was undeniable and the power trio that was to become Drop Radio was born in Fidel's basement on Walker hook. Drop Radio performed at virtually every event and venue that Saltspring had to offer. Starting at the Anise, playing at the Vesuvius Pub, Fulford days, Moby's pub, The Fall fair, Lions club, Beaverpoint, Mahon Hall, Fulford Hall, House parties, Rallies in Centennial square to Lasqueti Island, Drop Radio quickly became one of Salspring's most popular acts. Drop Radio was a local phenomenon that burned Brightly for 3 to 5 years with band breakups, added horn players, a keyboardist, new drummers and many guest appearances over the years. After 3 years Drop Radio recorded a full length album at Old Growth Records in Burgoyne bay. Daryl Chonka (Old Growth Records) became the unofficial 4th member of the band as the engineer and ushered us through the toiling and ultimately rewarding process of recording an album. Drop Radio did its best to survive the process, but ultimately band differences and Fidel moving back to Peru took the wind out of the sails. Drop Radio pushed the boundaries of Reggae, Ska, Latin and old school funk & rock to produce a sound very specific to Saltspring at that time.
