Summer is full of gigs, parties and festivals!
Boomtown has been a busy beaver building sets, making parties happen and living that #DadLife. I am still playing every Friday @ mobys pub, follow us on Insta for weekly updates. Back in June I attended Otherworld a regional Burning Man event hosted at Laketown Ranch on Vancouver Island. I was a part of the production team for a sound camp named C.L.G. Deep & Salty where we provided 20,000 watts of sound and programmed the stage with DJs all weekend. My set for the event can be found here: DJ Boomtown @ Otherworld 2024 I also spent 3 weekends in the lower mainland working Mainstage at Surrey Canada Day, Khatsalano Street party, and Surrey Fusion fest (celebration stage). I was stoked to see some great acts, helping bring music to the people and I even got to MC at Fusion Fest. Weekends have been busy with family visits, private parties and soaking up as much summer as we can. This past weekend we produced our annual mid-summer Fundraiser. What a blast! I'll post my set on socials once its ready to be released! Hope your summer is filled with fun and good music! See you this Friday at Mobys Pub if you find yourself on Salt Spring. Boomtown out

Hi! It's been a while since I've updated my Blog... Ever since Mid Summer and I turned 50, (Back in August) it seems that my life has been in hyperdrive. The Party was fabulous BTW! 2 days of DJS, Dinners, and 175 great friends co-celebrating with the lovely Ms. Alice on the beautiful Sunshine Coast with my amazing family! I was so grateful to my good friend DJ Daniel Trump for hosting my night at Moby's while I went on a little Vacay with My wonderful partner and 2 kids! I highly recommend you try Lasqueti if you want to brave the straight and have an off grid adventure. Right after that (in September) I co produced an event and performed with my wonderful friend and fellow musician Ganga Giri. We had a sold out show at Beaver Point Hall. What an amazing night of classic Island vibes and incredible dancing. Special thanks to David and Lila for hosting, and John Watson for the amazing photos. (see below for related content) All the while I maintained my Friday nights @Moby's pub with some special guests and some super fun nights of music and dancing. October didn't slow down much as my band and I (Tripp the System) prepared for our first public performance @ the Mateada Lounge. The show was a success and a great time was had by all! Thanks to Tommy (mateada bookings), DJ Sage, D'jule, our Sound guy Will Shulba and Simon Millerd on trumpet for making our show a success. Also thanks to Blair for Video work, footage to be released soon. I also hosted Rennie Foster in October, It was great to watch and learn from a local legend about the craft of DJ work, and we had an amazing private halloween party after the Friday night gig. In other news I also upgraded my DJ gear the the Pioneer XDJ-XZ all in one. This is going to bring my skills up to the next level and prepare me for DJaying out in club or festival land. I am very stoked to step into this new phase of learning and performance skill enhancing. Stay tuned for more mixes to be forthcoming. I also celebrated one year of Friday nights in Boomtown! I can't believe it has been a whole year, one tripp around the sun! I am so grateful to Moby's Pub Dale and Susan for inviting me to join the team, and DJ every Friday. Now, into the unknown... If you haven't heard the rumours, let me fill you in. Moby's pub is about to sell to a new owner. It's is my hope that the new captain at the helm of this cornerstone business on good old Salty wants to keep Boomtown Fridays going. At this Point I don't know. My current contract sees me to the end of December after that is currently an Unknown. Fingers crossed... BTW: This Friday, November 10th, 80's Night with your host: DJ Boomtown Below is all the Media from the past 2-3 months adventures. Enjoy Boomtown while you can, he may go back into the underground... Friday July 21st, 9pm to 12:30

A Journey Beyond Rap Music Hip hop is an extraordinary cultural phenomenon, surpassing the boundaries of a mere music genre. Emerging as a powerful movement rooted in the oppression faced by Black people, particularly in the United States, hip hop encompasses a rich tapestry of art forms. As a self-proclaimed guest who dabbles in the house of hip hop, it is my duty to honor and respect its origins. I am deeply enamored by the power, relevance, and incredible talent exhibited by rap artists, DJs, producers, sample culture, b-boys, and graffiti artists. In this article, we will delve into the birth of hip hop, drawing inspiration from notable artists and their contributions to the culture. In the late 1980s, while disco records were spinning, several groups of innovative Disk Jockeys and crews embarked on a journey of musical experimentation. These pioneers delved into breakbeats, loops, and early sampling, molding the music into their own unique creations. As the beats evolved, a new breed of "wordsmiths" emerged, rapping about the harsh realities of life in the Bronx, New York. These early lyrical artists paved the way for the expressive power of hip hop today. Reflecting on this era, the legendary rapper and pioneer Grandmaster Flash once remarked, "We took the street and made it our canvas. The music was our voice, and the turntables were our weapons." [1] This quote encapsulates the transformative essence of hip hop, where marginalized voices found liberation and expression through the artistic mediums of rap, DJing, Breakdancing and Graffiti. Hip hop culture was born out of a tumultuous environment characterized by gang violence, broken homes, poverty, racism, and discrimination. Although I can only begin to grasp the magnitude of these struggles, I think it is crucial to acknowledge the profound impact they had on the genre's evolution. Talib Kweli, an influential rap artist, shared his thoughts on this, stating, "Hip hop is a direct reflection of the environment we grew up in. It's a representation of the voiceless, a platform for the marginalized." [2] Furthermore, the journey of hip hop culture extends far beyond the mainstream stardom achieved by the select few African American artists, who've "made it", when compared to the total diaspora of Black people living in america or the world for that matter who are still living in poverty. Music can thrive in the unexplored and marginalized spaces, capturing the essence of individuals whose stories often go unheard. Kendrick Lamar, a socially conscious rapper, once said, "I'm not only representing myself, but I'm representing a lot of people that have come from a struggle." [3] This quote highlights the importance of appreciating and uplifting emerging art from underrepresented communities. At the core of hip hop culture lies a powerful message of freedom from oppression. This manifested through various artistic expressions such as remixing, sampling, and rapping about the realities of life. Common, a revered hip hop artist, encapsulated this sentiment, saying, "Hip hop is about expressing yourself and putting your experiences into something that you can feel." [4] Through their music, many artists have continuously shed light on social injustices, sparking conversations and inspiring change. As an advocate for the transformative potential of hip hop, I invite you to join me in diving deeper into the culture. Let us embrace the richness of hip hop, not only through its mainstream manifestations but also by exploring the roots and supporting emerging talents and less heard voices. Hip hop culture represents a vibrant tapestry of artistic expressions that transcend the boundaries of rap music. It emerged as a powerful movement born out of the struggles faced by Black communities, providing a platform for marginalized voices to be heard. By acknowledging the origins, appreciating the diversity, and supporting emerging artists, we can honor the truly transformative power of hip hop. This Friday at 9pm - 12:30 from the 90's till now. 9PM till close, No cover, No requests Bass music has to be one of my favourite all encompassing broad genre styles of music. It includes so many styles of electronic music that you can really create a diverse set. Main ingredient: Sub Bass. From dubstep or trap, garage to drum and bass, ghetto funk to half step even house music has a Bass House subgenre that really cranks. It is typically some form of the broken beat (or Breaks for short) even though Breaks is a genre all to itself as well. I hope to play a little bit of all of the above this Friday. Hope to see you on the dance floor, and don't be shy to show your best bass face. No Boomtown this Friday. Happy St. Patrick's Day! Kiss an Irish person if you know and like one. St.Patrick's Day (more like 12:38 AM in the morning 3 years ago...) forever changed my life! Zaeden Priest Meagher (pronounced Mar) was born into my life by my wonderfully loving and patient partner Charlotte M. Priest. Becoming a father is likely the most profound, amazing and powerful event of my life so far with my own birth coming in third, with pink floyd live in Toronto being the second. (Kidding!/not) But seriously now, being a dad, a DJ, a carpenter, a good partner, while starting a digital marketing company, keeps ol'e Boomtown as busy as the local watering hole on a Friday night. Cue ridiculously cute photo now! Zaeden with backpack and boots, ready for daycare. To be honest, I could really use a break from the odd Friday. Life is full on, as I'm sure it is for you too. You/I can honestly thank Zaeden for being so good at going to bed on most Fridays so papa can come out and Play! (Too many daddy references yet?) I am beyond thankful for the opportunity to re-hone my craft, as Dee-jaying & reading the crowd and dancing is one of my deeper passions.
Being in the endemic feels like such a release and to be back into gathering, dancing and socializing with less fear and a bit more openness, has been good medicine for the lonely fool in me. So thanks for showing up you beautiful little wonder! This Friday @mobys Buckdodgers band and Tom Hooper will be the entertainment! Catch you Next Friday for a ( b l a n k ) themed night of dj music 9-12:30. Frequency Friday - a night of house music
March 31st, 2023 9pm till close Moby's Pub, SSI, BC Join us once again for a night of dancing and revelry. I'm so gratefull. I've been working hard at my craft and living that dad life. I really need to thank my partner Charlotte for all her support and looking after our two toddlers while I spin out in the night life. Having a weekly residency @Moby's Pub has really helped me to uplevel my dj skills and build my music collection. Social media can be a little daunting when your time is ruled by the whims and passions of two small children while holding down a day job. I'm really appreciative of those who participate online, but especially those who show up every week to dance and have a good time. It's been a slow build since November coming out of a pandemic where restrictions didn't allow dancing in clubs and capacities were cut in half. The last 3 years I've been in a baby tunnel, and it has really shifted my priorities. I am so stoked to be able to play again and to have you fine folks show up! Music is a 2 way street, a symbiotic relationship between performer, music, sound and audience. We all feed off the good energy we share and co-create together. I don't think I will ever take for granted the value and importance of dancing and gathering together to share something as powerful as music and self expression. I hope you will join me in my musical journey so we can celebrate each other as we come out of the weirdest time of all our lives. Boom.
P.S. give me a follow for more stories, hit me up on email if you have a theme night suggestion or check out my previous life as a touring artist on youtube. And BTW thanks again! |
